BANANA

by

Michael Galligan

Is he man? Or is he BANANA? Clown, burlesque, and more in this “comedic tour de force”, an absurdist clown show exploring isolation and capitalism. BANANA had an award-winning run at PortFringe (Solo Performance, Patron’s Pick) and at the Edinburgh Fringe, listed on the Interrobang’s “Top Comedy Picks of 2023” and The List’s “Clowns to Watch Out For.”

Banana Man is trapped inside a cardboard box ready for shipping. Tricked out with props, magic, lights, fog, a projector and more, this box becomes Banana Man's safety blanket to avoid accepting the truth that he will soon spoil and get mushy. During the show, audience members are invited to connect with Banana Man through a game of bingo, a sexy song, a strip tease, stand-up comedy, a very sad song, among other theatrical bits. As he becomes more and more desperate to connect, he accidentally sets the box on fire and must finally step out from behind the cardboard. The piece is about the ticking clock we all face as humans, the range of things we do to avoid it, including a billion banana puns.
